Now that i got a chance to try out mastodon, pleroma (incl. self-hosting it years ago) and misskey, i like misskey for adding all sorts of fun features, but it loads just too slowly to consider it a good candidate for self-host in the future, shame. 8 seconds to full render in firefox on a fast desktop (only 2s in chrome however).

Someone also told me they had trouble following me cuz they use an old browser (or one without js, forgot which)... unfortunate that your choice of software has ripple effects like that, I'm fine with a js app for my own use but I don't like forcing it on others.

@AriaSalvatrice one can "just" use a desktop application for mastodon, there are a few ones out there, how many are electron/browser-based I dont know

@falktx@mastodon.falktx.com long term i'd rather self-host on a tiny vps, so a rails app known to take 2GB of ram for a single-user instance is kind of a non-starter, haha. but i'm not a fan of its authoritarian design either. eg., increasing the post length limit entails maintaining your own patches/fork (with the AGPL distribution requirements it arguably entails). Nor a fan of its rebranding the federation under its name.

Anyway, not like it degrades more gracefully than the other options!
