Imagine the scenario:
- Windows 11 system without internet access
- Linux VM running inside with internet access (maybe some usb wifi stick that Windows has no drivers for)
- web/internet browsing is only done through the Linux VM
- any downloaded files are placed in a shared folder, so the Windows side can install programs and also "send" files to the Linux side to be uploaded

How stupid of a setup is this?

@falktx this is how some visual effects companies operate, what are you after?

@minkiu having a reliable windows 11 install for music production and my own software testing, but really dont want to deal with so much microsoft nonsense on there.

just without internet is hard these days, so maybe if that was safely contained it could be made to work consistently and reliably?

most of the time the linux vm would be off, but on the occasion of wanting to install e.g. latest cardinal release, or running some software registration thing, would still be doable.

@falktx I see, so after giving it some thought, I think you might be able to use a USB wifi adapter, disable the network on windows altogether, but pass-through the USB device to the VM, and then use the wifi within the VM. And most VM software late you share a folder between the two. Definetly worth a try :D

@falktx You could also use an external firewall that blocks all traffic except to kx.studio. Your router might already support this (if not you could use a Raspberry Pi in between the PC and the internet).

Another option is to block specific domains by setting their DNS record to 0.0.0.0 (a common technique to block facebook)

@falktx Same issue here. I do it so. Win has just a LAN IP without Gateway then ssh -D 9050 studio@mylinuxmaschine so i have a Socksproxy on 127.0.0.1:9050. Then use it in Firefox or Brave. Could Be wrong but works for me. Yesterday i installed a headscale/tailscale network on my devices and todays plan is to check out the Pihole DNS sending the GAFAM URLS to the void.

@falktx
Thats funny but genius if you need to use Windows as ahost.
