on a self-hosted instance, anyone knows how to get content from other instances such as https://mastodon.social/tags/ubuntusummit ?
when searching/listing #ubuntusummit on mine, I dont see the stuff from other instances. is there some config or thing to enable somewhere?
@falktx I think you just need to follow people from other instances?
I run my own instance, and when I click on hashtags I see toots from people I don't follow, but **I think** they are all from instances where I follow someone.
I know you can set up a relay for federating with a specific instance, but i could never figure out how to do that.
@cnx nice tip! just tried adding a big one, pending @federationstream@mstdn.social approval.
@falktx Mastodon fetch posts from other instances using followed accounts on your instance. A post will be caught by your instance if:
it is from an account you follow
it is from an account someone else on your instance follows
it is boosted by an account you follow
it is boosted by an account someone else on your instance follows
Hashtags feeds on an instance list only those fetched messages, not more.
Mono-user instances can feel pretty empty because they do not catch as much posts as bigger ones. People tried to solve this by creating follow bots but nowadays, they are a bit frowned upon as some people used them to scrap content and harrass others
@falktx from my reading of it you cannot search tags across instances, only in your own instance.
If you follow others in other instances then tags they use can show up in your streams and be filtered on.
